On May 20, 2021 (PKT), Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 (K-2 Unit), the first HPR1000 project overseas, enters commercial operation following 100-hour pilot operation and performance tests. Before the official operation, all tests have been passed and construction, installation and testing finished. Marking a decisive first step of the global journey for the homegrown Gen-IIInuclear power technology, K-2 Unit has recorded the shortest construction period.
After completion, each of K-2 and K-3 Units is expected to produce 9000 GWh of electricity annually, which constitutes a significant part in Pakistan’s effort to optimize its energy mix, and in global effort to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality, and address climate change. The unit construction has catalyzed the progress of local economy and related industries by increasing equipment localization in Pakistan. With over 10,000 direct and over 40,000 indirect jobs created, the improvement of local well-beings and economic growth in Pakistan are therefore spurred.
Pakistan is the first stop of the global journey for China’s nuclear power projects and homegrown Gen-III nuclear technology. The successful experience in Karachi has won HPR1000 technology the recognition overseas, laying solid foundation for its further outward development. The commercial operation of K-2 Unit will fuel the following China-Pakistan nuclear energy cooperation and secure a sound foundation for following projects construction.
